How to Play Light Work: Lights, Elevator & Coworkers

How to play Light Work: switch off every light on each office floor, ride the elevator between floors and retreat to it when a coworker starts to approach.

Checked · Steam release, as listed on October 10, 2026 · Light Work Guide

What is the goal in Light Work?

You are leaving the office after a long day and cannot go home until the lights are off on every floor. The Steam listing says the building has more than five floors and that each one is different. For the background on the game itself, see what Light Work is.

How does each floor work?

Every floor follows the same order of events, taken from the store description.

  1. Ride the elevator to a floor and step out.
  2. Find every light source. The listing names desk lamps and light switches and says there are other kinds as well.
  3. Turn each one off. Some floors include puzzles and the game uses physics-based interaction, so not every light is a single switch.
  4. Check what your coworkers are doing while you work.
  5. When every light on the floor is off, go back to the elevator and travel to the next floor.

What do you do when a coworker approaches?

The listing’s instruction is direct: if coworkers start to approach you, return to the elevator and close the door. It also asks you to look out for unusual behaviour, so a change in what a coworker is doing is the warning sign.

One Steam reviewer wrote that running away feels like sprinting at half speed in a dream, and that this made the game scarier. If movement is that slow, outrunning a coworker from the far side of a floor is a poor plan; leaving early is the better one.

What should you know before a first run?

These are suggestions drawn from the store description and early player comments. They are not rules stated by the game.

  • Look across the whole floor before touching anything, so you know where the lights are and which way the elevator is.
  • Glance at the coworkers between lights. The game asks you to notice behaviour, and you cannot notice it while staring at a desk lamp.
  • Keep a mouse and keyboard within reach if you play with a gamepad. Steam lists controller support as partial.
  • If first-person cameras make you queasy, take it slowly. On October 10 a player on the Steam forum asked for a field-of-view slider because the default view gave them motion sickness.
  • Set aside about a quarter of an hour. The numbers behind that are in how long is Light Work.

What has not been confirmed yet?

The store page is the only official description so far, and it leaves these points open as of October 10, 2026.

  • Key bindings and the gamepad layout are not listed.
  • The exact number of floors is not given; the listing says more than five.
  • The listing does not say whether progress is saved between floors.
  • The listing does not say whether there is more than one ending.
  • The listing does not say what happens if a coworker reaches you.
  • No floor-by-floor walkthrough, lamp locations or puzzle solutions have been published yet. This page will link to one when it exists.
